Mission: To create an independent affordable housing campus, social atmosphere and encourage a fulfilled life
for adults with developmental disabilities to live in harmony in the community.

More About Us

This housing project is a vision of parents of those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Four parents along with their development disabled sons toured a housing campus in Omaha and were very impressed with what they saw. The families contacted Twin Cities Development Association, Inc (TCD) about the creation of an independent living solution for their loved ones. The families wanted a safe environment where others with similar developmental disabilities also live. This will be a place for loved ones to stay in our hometown, rather than hundreds of miles away.

This type of housing campus has been determined as a need that is lacking. The 2016 Housing Study for the Scottsbluff Gering area completed by Hanna-Keelan Associates determined housing for special needs population households and people with disabilities as one of the areas of need. There is a tremendous need for housing for this group of tenants that have special needs due to developmental and intellectual disabilities. The closest facility is over 400 miles away. Families want their loved ones to be able to have rental housing options in the community where their family members reside. The families are their support group. They want to be assured their son or daughter will be in an environment where they are safe, supported and in an atmosphere with similar individuals.
The Board is comprised of parents, professionals in the field of developmental disabilities and special education and community partners with a special interest in those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. In May 2020, the Board of Directors for Northfield Haven was developed and organized as an affiliated organization under the Oregon Trail Community Foundation, a corporation organized under the nonprofit Corporation laws of the State of Nebraska.

The architectural drawing for this housing campus are being developed and the project will be put out for bid and construction will begin in 2021.

Northfield Haven will be a housing campus for young adults with intellectual and development disabilities that are capable to live independently, with the supervision of a live in Resident Manager. There is not a housing campus, that we are aware of, outside of the Omaha area that provides independent housing for this segment of the population. The building that will be renovated for this project is at 2350 Five Rocks Road in Gering. The total project estimate is $1,300,000.  A grant for $500,00 was received and corporate, foundation and individual funding are being sought to fund the rest of the cost of the project. The project is short $250,000.
